Inadequate diet is one of the potential risk factors for emerging neurodevelopmental disorders. Changes happen in nutrient metabolism right from pregnancy driven by hormonal changes, fetal demands etc. Often deficient/excessive nutrient intake is associated with impaired linear growth, increased irritability, poor oral skills, obesity, etc. in the child. It has also shown to adversely impact the academic performance and increased social difficulties.
Research demonstrates that kids on the Autism spectrum and those having sensory disordersencounter issues with feeding and various gastrointestinal problems. These include sensitivities, food aversions, intolerance, allergies and ritualistic eating behaviors.Clinical trials with elimination diets or supplementary diets have shown improvement in certain behaviors in these children. Similarly, children with neurodegenerative andmusculoskeletal conditions like Cerebral palsy have poor nutritional status due to swallowing issues, increased energy expenditure, reduced overall physical activity, etc.
