Dysphagia & Swallow Therapy
Treatments and Programs
Making every swallow safer. Making every mealtime more meaningful.
Dysphagia & Swallow Therapy
Eating and drinking are essential to a child’s growth, nutrition, and overall well-being. However, for some children, swallowing can be difficult, uncomfortable, or unsafe. At SNEH, our Dysphagia & Swallow Therapy services focus on assessing and supporting children who experience difficulties with swallowing, helping families navigate feeding challenges with greater understanding and confidence.
Dysphagia refers to difficulty swallowing food, liquids, or saliva. It may occur due to neurological conditions, developmental differences, structural concerns, or difficulties coordinating the muscles involved in swallowing. With appropriate assessment and an individualised management plan, children can receive support tailored to their specific needs.
When Can Dysphagia & Swallow Therapy Help?
Children may benefit from an assessment when they experience:
-
Coughing or Choking During Meals: Difficulty managing food or liquids safely while eating or drinking.
-
Difficulty Coordinating Swallowing: Challenges coordinating sucking, chewing, swallowing, and breathing.
-
Prolonged Mealtimes: Meals that consistently take longer than expected because of feeding difficulties.
-
Difficulty Managing Food Textures: Challenges progressing from liquids to purees, soft foods, or age-appropriate textures.
-
Food or Liquid Loss: Food spilling from the mouth or difficulty managing food within the mouth.
-
Recurrent Respiratory Problems: Repeated chest infections that may warrant investigation for swallowing-related concerns.
-
Feeding Difficulties Associated with Neurological Conditions: Swallowing challenges linked to cerebral palsy, developmental delays, or other neurological conditions.
-
Infant Feeding Concerns: Difficulties with sucking, feeding coordination, or swallowing in infants, including those born prematurely.
Some swallowing difficulties may occur without obvious coughing or choking. Persistent feeding concerns should therefore be evaluated by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
Our Approach at SNEH
Comprehensive Feeding & Swallowing Assessment
We consider the child’s medical history, developmental abilities, feeding patterns, oral-motor skills, and signs of swallowing difficulty to determine the need for further evaluation.
Individualised Therapy Planning
Recommendations are tailored to the child’s specific difficulties, nutritional needs, developmental stage, and safety requirements.
Oral-Motor & Feeding Skill Support
Where clinically appropriate, interventions may address the skills needed to manage food in the mouth, chew, and coordinate the movements involved in feeding.
Safe Feeding Strategies
Families receive guidance on appropriate positioning, feeding pace, food textures, and other strategies based on individual clinical recommendations.
Instrumental Assessment When Required
If swallowing safety cannot be established through a clinical assessment alone, an instrumental investigation, such as a videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS) or fibreoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES), may be recommended through an appropriate specialist service.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration
We recognise that swallowing difficulties can affect nutrition, hydration, and respiratory health. Where needed, care is coordinated with paediatricians, speech and language therapists with relevant dysphagia expertise, dietitians, and other medical specialists.
Partnering with Families for Safer Feeding
When a child struggles to swallow, mealtimes can become a source of anxiety for the entire family. Understanding the underlying difficulty is an important first step towards appropriate support.
At SNEH, we work with families to help them understand their child’s feeding needs, follow clinically guided recommendations, and create more supportive mealtime experiences without compromising safety.
