Arts Based Therapy (ABT) is defined as the clinical and evidence-based use of art-forms (music, drama and visual arts) to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship. It is an art form, practised scientifically based on the Subtle energy theory.
The human brain & subtle energy fields (i.e. Endocrine system which secrete hormones that regulate various human functions like metabolism, growth & development, mood, tissue function, etc & human bio field) is the basic domain of treatment in ABT. Music, drama, visual art have observable effects on human brain functioning & its effects can be used therapeutically.
ABT provides a non-threatening environment to the recipient, as it uses various art forms like music, movement, drama, visual art, incorporated into fun sessions. Thereby the therapy is happening very subtly, without the recipients knowledge.
ABT can be used with all age groups, starting from kids to adults. It can be used in the healing process of anyone who is physically or mentally challenged to cancer patients & their families, street children, sex workers, children at risk, alcoholics at the de-addiction centre, depressed population, to anyone who is dealing with behavioural issues like stress, low confidence, suicidal tendencies, etc.
It is applicable across various domains like:
- Motor Domain
- Sensory Domain
- Cognitive (Concept Formation) Domain
- Self Expression (Social Dynamics) Domain
- Composite Domain
- Client’s Perception of Self
There is a lot of research & analysis which is done pre & post each session. Each session is designed scientifically, keeping the need area to be addressed in mind. The sessions would invariably be using any of the art forms to all of the art forms, as per the need & response of the client.
ABT can be used in individual as well as group sessions. It is also very useful for the care-givers & family members too.
